When Abeer and her family arrived in Canada from Cairo in 1996, she was already a medical graduate with a master’s degree in clinical and chemical pathology. In 2007, she passed her Canadian Medical Evaluation Examination and started working as a vision therapist. She then went on to obtain a certificate as a practical vision therapist in 2017. “I became a Berard Auditory Integration Practitioner in 2018 and started Avid Sensory Wellness a year later,” said Abeer.
Avid Sensory Wellness provides the service of Berard Auditory Integration Training (a program that helps reorganize capabilities using frequency, repetition, and duration) while simultaneously promoting wellness using innovative products. “I wanted to provide services and products hardly available in our local area to make it available and easier to get and purchase,” said Abeer.
Inspired by her daughter’s diagnoses of Misophonia (a disorder in which certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable given the circumstance), Abeer was on a mission to find a solution to not only help her daughter but people struggling with similar conditions. She soon noticed that many products and services were simply not available to many of these people and that’s how her idea was born. “I try to have services available that are not around yet in abundance,” said Abeer “As for the products, I hope to make them easier to find, better price and faster to arrive”.
Another inspiration for Abeer’s journey into entrepreneurship was a close friend of hers who also started her own venture “She started from scratch, always working hard and steadily successful” said Abeer.
So, what does a busy entrepreneur like Abeer like to do in her free time? “I love cooking, shopping, sewing, hosting my friends, and family time,” said Abeer.
As a member of the EPIC VentureWomen program, Abeer along with the rest of the cohort will receive mentorship, access to workshops, industry connections, and tools and resources specific to each startup’s needs. “[by the end of the program] I hope to find a way to product development, which is a skill that I thrive to develop,” said Abeer “I hope to turn these ideas into real products and have a start on the market if possible. I also hope to have many of the business skills much improved”
