Windsor, ON – United Way/Centraide Windsor-Essex County is inviting community organizations to submit their proposals to improve food security for residents in Windsor and Essex County.
The first phase of the application process begins November 14, 2016. Organizations have until January 31, 2017 to submit funding proposals that will ensure vulnerable people in Windsor and Essex can buy, grow, cook, and eat the healthy foods they want.
Building on the successes of the last six years, United Way’s community investments focus on addressing root causes of critical issues in our community by moving people from poverty to possibility, helping kids be all they can be, and building strong communities.
The strategic direction for improving the food security of our residents is shifting, based on a year and a half of community consultation with more than 570 individuals and community organizations.
“The community consultation has provided an opportunity to re-imagine our region’s food security strategy for the next decade,” says Lorraine Goddard, CEO of United Way. “Our goal is to create a sustainable and empowering food security system that will help move people out of poverty, including looking at social enterprise investment models.”
Investment decisions will be made by United Way’s local Community Impact Volunteer Council and approved by the United Way Board of Directors. Food Security funding for successful applicants will begin on July 1, 2017. “United Way is committed to ensuring that people don’t go hungry in our community,” says Barry Horrobin, Chair of the United Way Board of Directors. “The investments we will make over the next few years will lay the foundation for inspiring new ways of achieving this outcome.”
