Faculty Entrepreneurship & Commercialization Lunch n’ Learn

EPICentre, in partnership with the Office of Research and Innovation Services (ORIS), hosts monthly Faculty Entrepreneurship & Commercialization Lunch n’ Learn events to share the latest happenings in entrepreneurship and research commercialization space. Each month, we invite a different guest speaker to come and share his/her experiences in how he/she incorporates entrepreneurship in his/her course in the entrepreneurship stream. In commercialization stream, the guest speaker will share with the audience his/her business and how that business supports his/her research and vice versa.

Members from all faculties are welcome to attend.

September 2019 Topic: How a law professor incorporates entrepreneurship into her course

Guest Speaker: Professor Myra Tawfik, Professor of Law and EPICentre Professor of IP Commercialization & Strategy

Description: Professor Tawfik, in partnership with EPICentre, launched an experiential learning course for her law students called the “EPICentre Practicum” in Winter 2019 semester. Professor Tawfik will share her experiences in how this idea came along and how the course works.

October 2019 Topic: How an engineering professor use commercialization strategy to support her research

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jill Urbanic, Professor of Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering

Description: Dr. Jill Urbanic co-founded CAMufacturing Solutions in 2015 as she saw the need of her expertise in customized manufacturing software in the industry. Find out more how her company plays a role in supporting her research in her Advanced Production and Design Lab.

November 2019 Topic: How an art professor teaches her students entrepreneurial skills

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Willet, Associate Professor, School of Creative Arts & Director, INCUBATOR Art Lab

Description: Dr. Jennifer Willet, Canada Research Chair in Art, Science and Ecology, will discuss her strategies for integrating students into her professional research and artistic activities. Through her undergraduate bioart class, the MFA program in Visual Arts, and the INCUBATOR Art Lab research group, students gain first hand experience in the entrepreneurial aspects of producing arts events, and managing an art career.

January 2020 Topic: Building Startups Through Partnership and Collaboration

Guest Speaker: 
Dr. Govindaraja Atikukke, Co-founder and CTO of ITOS Oncology

Description: Dr. Govindaraja Atikukke will talk about his entrepreneurial journey in founding ITOS Oncology and the importance of building partnership and collaboration with the community, which played an instrumental part in getting his company to the current stage.
