IP Basics for Startups









Whether it’s a trademark or brand, copyright, patent, know-how, trade secrets, intellectual property rights can be extremely valuable for your business. During this workshop, we will discuss the basics of intellectual property while also analyzing how intellectual property can be used as a strategic advantage in your business.

We will explore a variety of different topics including
• Identifying the different forms of IP (patents, copyright, trademarks, trade secrets, industrial designs), what they protect and for how long
• Learning how intellectual property can be used as a strategic advantage in your business

In this workshop, special guest Vikas Sharma will be leading a one hour workshop followed by a question-answer period.

The event is open to all UWindsor students, members of the community, entrepreneurs and past EPICentre workshop participants.

Vikas Sharma – Vikas obtained both his Juris Doctorate and Honors in Sociology and Minor in Criminology from the University of Western Ontario. While at the University of Western Ontario, Vikas assisted many Start-Up companies in their business operations and marketing. He was also one of the initial members of the business incubator at Western University. Vikas is raised in London, Ontario and serves clients from the London and surrounding areas. In his spare time, Vikas plays the Tabla and volunteers at his local Temple. He also enjoys golfing and playing pickup basketball. Vikas is fluent in Hindi and Punjabi. He holds memberships in the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Middlesex Law Association.
